- South Africa and Afghanistan have met once before, at the 2010 World T20. South Africa won that match by 59 runs. Interestingly, Charl Langeveldt, who is now South Africa’s bowling coach, was a star performer in that game with 3 for 12.
- While South Africa lamented the 26 extras they gave away against England on Friday – the most in a T20 innings this year – Afghanistan have had a similar problem. They conceded 23 extras against Zimbabwe in January.
South Africans lost their opening game against England even after scoring a mammoth of 229 while Afghanistan couldn’t really post a massive target against Sri Lanka on a wicket where the ball was gripping and was hard to bat on. Now it will be a flat wicket and let’s see how the two sides take advantage of it.
- Umpires – CB Gaffaney (New Zealand) and PR Reiffel (Australia)

Even though South Africa lost to England after posting such a huge total on the board, they will be going in as favorites as they take on the inexperienced, yet promising, Afghan outfit. They were given a top start the other day by de Kock and Amla who both scored fifties and then there was lower order brilliance from JP Duminy who managed to get an unbeaten 54 as well.
Most of their batsmen are in cracking form and they will be expected to post an even bigger score on the board if they bat first against a considerably weaker and inexperienced bowling line up of Afghanistan.
No matter how good South Africa are batting, they really have to do some good work in the bowling department and things have to be put in place before they take on Afghanistan. Their bowling spearhead, Dale Steyn, was taken to the attack by the English batsmen as he was hit for 35 runs in just 2 overs and proved to be their most expensive bowler on the day.
Abbot and Rabada were also expensive but they were amongst wickets as well. Most economical of them all was Imran Tahir who took 1 for 28 in his 4. Nevertheless, they will be playing on the same track again and must to the good work to avoid hammering on the hands of Afghan batsmen.
Afghanistan looked impressive when they batted against Sri Lanka in their first match in the Super 10 round as they managed to score 153 runs on a considerably tough wicket. Their captain, Asghar Stanikzai, played a brilliant knock of 62 runs and was the major contributor to take the score to that point. Samiullah Shenwari played brilliantly towards the end for his quick fire 31 as well. However, this time the wicket will be expected to be a better one and the Afghans will expect their top order batsmen with the likes of Mohammad Shehzad and Noor Ali Zadran to give them a head start against a demoralized South African bowling attack.
Their bowlers couldn’t really impress on a supporting track against Sri Lanka and if they have to fancy their chances against a fierce protease batting line up then they will have to bowl in the right spots. Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi looked impressive, however, picking up 1 wicket each for just 27 and 25 runs respectively.
Faf du Plessis
Faf couldn’t play a big knock against England and the worst part was that he couldn’t defend 229 runs. He really needs some working around ahead of this match.
Stanikzai has already scored a couple of fifties in the tournament and will be expected to play a big knock against South Africa as well. But he must find a way to grab a precious win here.
South Africa will certainly be the favorites and unless Afghanistan give their 100% in every department to come up with an upset.
We’ll have another batting paradise in Mumbai today and playing conditions are just perfect on a Sunny day with max 35° C.
