Even after losing their last couple of matches in the World T20I 2016, Pakistan still stand an outside chance of making it to the semi-finals if they defeat Australia with a reasonable margin in this game and then Australia go on to win a close one against India. However, Australia will be looking to win it and then win one against India as well to make sure they have a clear path to the semis to join New Zealand.
Pakistan played their last match at this very venue against New Zealand a couple of days back and they just gave it away after having a blistering start to their run chase. However, they’d definitely like to improve on their weak points this time around and Sharjeel Khan will again be playing a key role here as well. He scored a firing 47 in the last match but couldn’t carry on to take his side closer to a win.

However, the advantage was given away as none of the other batsmen could really play an innings that would have taken them over the line as Ahmad Shehzad, Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik all played at run-a-ball which was never going to be enough in a big 181 runs chase. Afridi played a little cameo scoring 19 from just 9 balls but it was all in vain at the end of the day. So, if Pakistan have to keep their hopes alive, they will really need to come up with a consolidated effort against Australia.
T20 World Cup 2016 Super 10 Group 2 Points Table
The bowlers didn’t do a pretty good job against the firing batting line of New Zealand either. Most of them were quite expensive and even Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Amir couldn’t do much about the brilliance from New Zealand batsmen. Only Mohammad Sami and Imad Wasim bowled economically and Sami and Afridi picked up 2 wickets each. So, the bowlers will be expected to become the real hindrance for Australia on the day.
Australia lost their first match to New Zealand and they got pretty close to losing one more against Bangladesh as well. Both the matches were average run scoring games and if Australia fail to give a solid batting effort then they may lose it against Pakistan. Only Usman Khawaja has been rock solid for them at the top scoring 38 and 58 against New Zealand and Bangladesh respectively. All others have played handy knocks but no one has come up with something big. If they have to fancy their chances against Pakistan then at least a couple of batsmen from Khawaja, Watson, Smith, Warner and Maxwell will have to play big convincing knocks.
Zampa is bowling well for them and will be in the spotlight in the next match as well. But the rest will really have to figure out a way to dominate Pakistani batting and pick up crucial wickets at the right time. Watson, Coulter-Nile and Hastings are going to be their main wicket taking options against Pakistan for sure.
This may well be the last T20I game for Shahid Afridi and he will have to play a big knock and lead his side to victory.
Young captain has lead Australia well on the field in two matches but a big knock is still due on him with the bat.
- Match Predictions
- It’s pretty even-steven and whoever plays well on the day is going to win it.
- Pitch/Weather Updates
- Mohali wicket looked pretty good for batting but the bowlers did extract something through their variations. It will behave very much like that. It will be partly cloudy and 34° C on Friday.
