England win the toss and will bat, in bright, sunny, hot conditions. Hales is out – stiff back – replaced by James Vince, and Topley’s out. Liam Plunkett, not Dawson, replaces him. Stanikzai would’ve batted, too. A reader named Balladeer isn’t convinced. “So that’s the match lost then, Morgan you silly billy.”
Afghanistan got the hammering against South Africa while bowling first and got quite close to the target but there were still quite far away and couldn’t get over the line. England also got the same treatment from the same opposition in the last match and they managed to chase down a massive 230 runs target. So, the two sides will be looking to get over the other here in Feroz Shah Kotla today.
Even though Afghanistan batsmen are scoring runs quite heavily in this tournament but the bowlers are not supporting them well so far. If they really have to defeat England today then the bowlers will jump up with some super performances. Mohammad Shehzad played a brilliant knock of 44 runs from just 19 balls but no one else could really play a big knock that could win them the match.
Asghar Stanikzai, the Afghan captain, is also in top form with a couple of fifties already in the tournament. If he and a couple of others fire in unison today then Afghanistan can surely fancy their chances against a ferocious England outfit. Samiullah Shenwari and Gulbadin Naib also looked in good touch in the last match against Afghanistan.
They will be expecting their bowlers to come up with some better performances and take wickets at regular intervals. All their main bowlers with the likes of Amir Hamza, Dawlat Zadran, Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Nabi picked up 1 wicket each but most of them were really expensive. So, they have to find out a way to overcome their fears and bowl in the right channels to get wickets.
Quite a few English batsmen have played the innings of their lives as they defeated South Africa in their last match in the ICC World T20I. It was Joe Root who lead their way through to their successful chase and helped them get over the line in the end chasing down 230 runs successfully which was once looking completely out of reach.
They will be expecting to come up with a similar performance even today against a considerably weaker bowling outfit. Jason Roy scored 43 at the top from just 16 balls while Joe Root scored 83 from 44 balls in England’s successful run chase and they will again be leading their batting line up today as well.
However, English bowlers will have to come up with something really substantial considering the fact that Afghan batsmen are also hitting it big and will be taking them to the attack right from the start. They will especially have to lay out a plan against Mohammad Shehzad who blasted his way through to 44 against South Africa and helped his side reach 172 in the end. Chris Jordan was most expensive of the lot against South Africa and will have to put things right today.
Even though he has scored a couple of fifties already in the tournament, he failed to put up a compelling fight against South Africa. He will be expected to manage his bowling resources well and play a handy knock with the bat today.
Morgan is yet to play a big innings in the tournament so far and will be expected lead his side well to get an emphatic victory over the Afghans.
England will be the sure shot favorites and Afghanistan will be expected to put up a good fight.
The wicket in Delhi is expected to offer turn right from the beginning. Bowlers will definitely find it helpful. It’s 33° C today and is completely sunny.
